Weighted Blanket Guide

A weighted blanket should be chosen to fit the person, not the bed.

Unlike traditional blankets, weighted blankets are designed to provide gentle, evenly distributed pressure across the body. For the best experience, the blanket should rest on top of the mattress without hanging over the sides.

If a weighted blanket hangs over the edges of the bed, its weight can gradually pull it off during the night, reducing both comfort and effectiveness.

Many families choose to use a regular duvet or comforter during the day and keep their weighted blanket folded at the foot of the bed until bedtime.

How Much Should a Weighted Blanket Weigh?

As a general guideline, a weighted blanket should weigh approximately 10% of the user's body weight.

However, comfort is equally important. Some individuals prefer slightly lighter or heavier pressure depending on their sensory preferences and experience with weighted products.

When introducing a weighted blanket for the first time, always monitor comfort levels and ensure the user can remove the blanket independently.

Weighted Blankets for Toddlers

Small Size

Approx. 120 cm x 75 cm

⚠️ Weighted blankets should never be used for children under 12 months of age.

Our Small blanket is designed to fit the child rather than the bed and is typically suitable for children between 1 and 6 years old.

Benefits of choosing the correct size:

✓ Provides consistent deep-pressure input
✓ Fits comfortably over the body
✓ Reduces excess weight pulling on the blanket
✓ Easier for younger children to manage independently

When selecting a weight, always use the recommended weight guidelines and ensure your child can comfortably remove the blanket without assistance.

Weighted Blankets for Children

Medium Size

Approx. 150 cm x 90 cm

Typically suitable for children aged 6–12 years, depending on height and body size.

One of the most common misconceptions is that a weighted blanket should match the size of the bed. In reality, weighted blankets are designed to fit the individual user.

A blanket that is too large may:

  • Slide off the bed during the night
  • Feel heavier than intended
  • Reduce the effectiveness of the deep-pressure input

Weight Selection Examples

Example 1

Child's weight: 22 kg

  • Small 2 kg blanket → Suitable
  • Medium 3 kg blanket → May be too heavy

In this case, the Small 2 kg blanket would typically be the better option.

Example 2

Child's weight: 37 kg

  • Medium 3 kg blanket → May feel too light
  • Large 4.5 kg blanket → May feel too heavy

In situations like this, a custom-weighted blanket may provide the best balance of comfort and therapeutic benefit.

Important

Every child responds differently to deep-pressure input.

If your child ever feels uncomfortable, restricted, or unhappy with the blanket, remove it immediately and consider a lighter weight.

Weighted Blankets for Teenagers & Adults

Large Size

Approx. 180 cm x 105 cm

Our Large weighted blanket is suitable for most teenagers and adults.

While the 10% body-weight guideline is a useful starting point, individual preferences can vary considerably.

Some individuals enjoy heavier sensory input, while others prefer a lighter level of pressure.

For Individuals with Autism

Many autistic individuals find deep-pressure input calming and regulating.

For most users, selecting a blanket close to the recommended weight guideline provides a comfortable level of sensory input while maintaining freedom of movement.

For Individuals with Anxiety, Stress, or Sleep Difficulties

If you are purchasing a weighted blanket primarily for:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress management
  • Relaxation
  • Restless sleep
  • Insomnia

you may find a slightly lighter blanket more comfortable, particularly if you have never used a weighted blanket before.

Starting lighter and increasing weight later if desired is often the most comfortable approach.

Extra Large Weighted Blankets

Extra Large Size

Approx. 195 cm x 135 cm

Our Extra Large weighted blanket is designed for larger beds and users who prefer a wider blanket.

Even at this size, the blanket should remain on top of the mattress and should not hang over the edges of the bed.

Because of its size and weight, many users find the Extra Large blanket significantly more difficult to move and manage than our standard Large size.

For this reason, we generally recommend considering the Large size first unless you specifically require the additional coverage.

Safety Guidelines

✓ Always ensure the user can remove the blanket independently.
✓ Introduce the blanket gradually if it is being used for the first time.
✓ Follow the recommended weight guidelines.
✓ Discontinue use if discomfort occurs.
✓ Consult a healthcare professional or occupational therapist if you are unsure which weight is most appropriate.
